What is ICN?

ICN is a non-profit organisation funded by the State Government to support import replacement and assist Australian companies access export opportunities.

As well as its head office in Melbourne, ICN has five regional Victorian offices based in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Wodonga and Traralgon. ICN Victoria is part of a network of 26 offices throughout Australia and New Zealand.

With a growing database of over 50,000 companies, this network is widely recognised as the leading authority on Australian / NZ business capability.



How Does ICN Work?

ICN's Business Capability Advisers consult with purchasers and project / procurement mangers to identify supply requirements, while working closely with local industry to identify Australian / NZ business capability. The information is used to business-match purchasers with capable, competitive local suppliers.

Purchasers are provided with a valuable sourcing service that will save time and money, while suppliers have access to up-to-date information on business opportunities.

Using their extensive knowledge of Australian industry capability, ICN's Business Capability Advisers identify opportunities for import replacement and nominate local alternatives, as well as assisting businesses expand into overseas markets.

Regional Industry Link - Your Gateway to Opportunities

Regional Industry Link (RIL) is a state-wide industry development program that provides businesses across Victoria with access to opportunities and major public and private projects.

Funded by the Victorian Government and managed by ICN, the program is designed to assist industry grow and diversify, promoting employment and economic growth across the State.

The program provides registered businesses with automatic notification of relevant opportunities. RIL assists buyers, councils and project identify local capability by providing access to its capability database, searchable by product, service, region, industry or keyword.

ICN Results


Success is measured by orders to suppliers that have been nominated by ICN.

In 2008 / 09 ICN Victoria recorded $206.3 million in orders to Australian / NZ industry.

Since inception, ICN Victoria has recorded more than $2 billion in orders to Australian / NZ industry, which equates to more than 40,000 jobs.

A study carried out for ICN by Australian Economic Consultants Pty Ltd (AEC Group) revealed that in 2007 / 08 every $1 million spent in the manufacturing industry in Australia generates:

Full time jobs: 10 - (4 direct jobs and 6 indirect)
Tax revenue: $333,900
Value Added*: $985,000
Welfare Benefits**: $95,000

Every $1 million spent in the services sector in Australia generates:

Full time jobs: 11 - (6 direct jobs and 5 indirect)
Tax revenue: $331,900
Value Added*: $979,200
Welfare Benefits**: $104,100

* ' Value Added' includes wages, salaries, taxes paid and profits.
** 'Welfare Benefits' refers to payments made by Social Security in order to assist and sustain unemployed persons.
